Cardiology:

Our Cardiology Program offers a full range of cardiac services including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and advanced heart failure programs. Call (205) 558-4729 for more information. Read more about our cardiology program, includes cardiovascular care (open heart).

Emergency Room (ER):

Our ER is a 12-bed unit, that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Treatment is provided for urgent and emergent medical conditions. Surgical care is also provided on a consultation basis. Psychiatric emergencies are referred to the Tuscaloosa VA, or other VA or non-VA psychiatric facilities based upon bed availability. Patients with major trauma are referred to the nearest trauma center. Patients with conditions requiring emergent care who do not live in Birmingham are referred to the nearest  hospital for stabilization and transfer. Please call (205) 933-4518 for more information. Geriatric Assessment Clinic:

The staff in this clinic provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment for frail, older veterans. The clinic team consists of physicians, nurses, social workers, optometrists, psychologists, audiologists, dieticians, and physical and occupational therapists. Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC):

Birmingham/Atlanta Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC): The GRECC Mission is to improve the capability of the VA health care delivery system to provide services that are effective and appropriate in meeting the medical, psychological, and social needs of older veterans through research, education and innovative clinical services.  The GRECC Mission is accomplished through: Research focusing on mobility, incontinence and related disorders, and palliative care; Education of health care personnel, veterans, and their families; and Clinical demonstration programs for eligible veterans.  GRECC Research Cores include a Data Analysis Core, Muscle Research Laboratory, Clinical Exercise Facility, Urodynamic and Anorectal Function Laboratories.  Specific Education and Training Projects include  Continence, Mobility, and Palliative Care Education, Training  and Mentorship Programs; Weekly Scientific Seminars and Conferences and Monthly Journal Clubs; and a Special Fellowship in Advanced Geriatrics Clinical Demonstrations include Outpatient Continence Clinics, Fall Prevention and Mobility Clinic, Palliative Care Programs (Consults, Outpatient Program, and Safe Harbor In-Patient Unit).   Call (205) 558-7064 for more information.

Palliative Care

Birmingham VAMC offers Safe Harbor Palliative Care Services with inpatient and outpatient consults. The goal is to relieve the pain and sufffering (emotional, physical, social and spiritual) along the continuum of medical care. Although hospice care may be a part of palliative care, it is not synonymous with palliative care. Read more about our palliative care program.

Pharmacy

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Program

Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP):

Surgical Specialties

This includes cardiovascular surgery, general surgery, GYN, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, urology, and vascular surgery. Visual Impairment Services Team (VIST):

Our The VIST services include yearly examinations, referrals to the Southeastern Blind Rehabilitation Center, individual and group therapy, and a complete benefits review for eligible visually impaired veterans. VIST services are also provided monthly, at the Huntsville Outpatient Clinic. The VIST Coordinator can be contacted at (205) 933-8101, ext. 4389.
