About Birmingham
The Birmingham VA Medical Center is an acute tertiary care facility with particularly strong programs in both medicine and surgery and serves as the primary referral center for the state. We provide health care services to eligible veterans in the VA Southeast Network . The 32-bed Southeastern Blind Rehabilitation Center is one of nine in the VA system. Recent construction provides state-of-the-art facilities and equipment in all clinical programs. Located in the Birmingham historic south side district of the city, the facility's primary affiliation is with the University of Alabama hospitals and clinics.

New Director Appointed

Rica Lewis-Payton, Chief Operating Officer for the South Central VA Healthcare Network, has been appointed director of the Birmingham VA Medical Center in Birmingham , Ala. , and will arrive at the medical center on August 20. “Ms. Lewis-Payton has a wide range of health care leadership experience throughout many levels of VA,” said Robert W. Ratliff, Interim Medical Center Director. “Her experience, knowledge, and leadership will help our medical center maintain and continue to build on our successes.” To read more click here.
Birmingham VA selected to host 2009 National Veterans Golden Age Games.
The Birmingham VA Medical Center will host about 700 athletes from Alabama and elsewhere for the 2009 edition of the National Veterans Golden Age Games. The games will be held from May 31- June 5, 2009. About 1,100 local volunteers will be needed to help the games go smoothly. Those interested in helping support the 2009 Golden Age games can call Patricia Fetzer, the VA medical center's director of volunteers, at 933-4396.
Suicide Hot Line
VA has begun operating a national suicide prevention hot line for veterans. The toll–free hot line number-- 1–800–273–TALK (8255) –– is staffed by mental health professionals 24–hours a day, seven days a week. "Veterans need to know these VA professionals are literally a phone call away," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson. "All service members who experience the stresses of combat can have wounds on their minds as well as their bodies. Veterans should see mental health services as another benefit they have earned."
